The most common question we hear this time of year is, “What’s your New Year’s resolution?”
We’ve all been there—starting off with great ambition, only to find it challenging to stay on track as days turn into weeks and weeks into months. It can be tough to maintain focus and motivation. That’s why we’ve created a guide to help your players achieve their New Year’s resolutions both on and off the field.
Introducing our S.T.A.R. Guide, designed to make 2025 the best softball season yet! Let's work together to keep our goals in sight and make this year a fantastic one!
What is S.T.A.R.?
S.T.A.R. stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. This framework helps players define their goals in a structured way, making them more attainable and measurable. Here’s how to break it down.
1. Situation Begin by identifying the current situation or challenge the player is facing. This could be anything from needing to improve a specific skill to wanting to enhance overall performance. | 3. Action Outline the specific actions the player will take to achieve the task. This should include realistic and actionable steps that can be integrated into their training routine. |
2. Task Define the specific task or objective the player wants to achieve. This should be clear and focused. | 4. Result Finally, describe the desired outcome or result. This helps in visualizing success and provides motivation for the player. |
Putting It All Together
Encourage players to write out their S.T.A.R. goal using the framework.

Situation: The player currently has a batting average of .250, which is below the desired level for competitive play
Task: The objective is to improve this batting average to .300 by the end of the season
Action: To achieve this, the player will practice hitting drills three times a week, focusing on technique, timing, and consistency
Result: By the end of the season, the player successfully raises their batting average to .300, contributing positively to both personal development and the team's overall performance.
Setting S.T.A.R. Goals empowers our players to take ownership of their development. Coaches can facilitate this process during practice, and parents can support their athletes by discussing these goals at home too!
